Shared Space Scheme Design

What is street design?

Streets aren't just conduits for movement: they are environments in their own right, connecting people and places.

Street design techniques have been advancing rapidly in recent years with the focus moving away from the needs of motor vehicle users and segregation to the needs of all street users and their safe interaction.

This concept of shared space, pioneered in the Netherlands by Hans Monderman, is now being realised more widely in the UK.

What we offer

We have an established track record in the planning and design of streetscape schemes for residential and mixed priority streets. Our pioneering shared space techniques have led to us being commended for our work at the IHT Manual for Streets Awards.

We are fully conversant with the requirements of Manual for Streets and Link and Place addressing the often conflicting transport objectives in our designs. We work with urban designers and are mindful of the 7 objectives of urban design:

  1. Character
  2. Continuity and enclosure
  3. Quality of the public realm
  4. Ease of movement
  5. Legibility
  6. Adaptability
  7. Diversity
