Traffic Engineering

The problem: The UK’s road network is under increasing pressure to accommodate the day-to-day traffic flows of local communities.

The solution: At Transport Planning Associates, our traffic engineers are experienced at developing innovative, cost-effective solutions that meet the needs of all users, often within constrained spaces. By combining creativity with our extensive practical knowledge, we are able to deliver the high standards and results that our clients have come to expect.

Our capabilities

Preliminary Junction Design
Preliminary Junction Design
We provide our clients with innovative and comprehensive preliminary junction design to deliver access solutions to development and improvements to existing highway infrastructure in both urban and rural locations. Consideration of sustainable transport modes is integral to this process.

Analysis and modelling
Analysis and Modelling
We analyse existing and proposed junction and highway networks using a combination of the latest industry standard software including VISSIM and PARAMICS micro-simulation modelling.

Swept Path Analysis
Swept Path Analysis
Access to highway infrastructure and future development sites is key in delivering realistic and practical solutions. We provide vehicle swept path analysis that make the most efficient use of land. Our experience includes service yard design, delivery management strategies and residential and commercial access requirements.

Traffic Management Studies
Traffic Management Studies
We provide comprehensive design solutions for traffic management in urban and rural locations from traffic calming techniques to detailed traffic signage schemes in town centre locations. Whether as part of an urban regeneration scheme or local transport study we have experience with working with local authorities in delivering innovative scheme design in challenging environments.

Parking and Servicing Studies
Traffic Management Studies
We have experience in delivering urban car park management strategies which include Variable Message Signing and Congestion Management Techniques. We have the ability to develop on and off street service delivery management plans associated with commercial and residential development. We also have in-house experts in managing and delivering alterations to Traffic Orders with local authorities.

Transport Interchange Design
We work with local authorities and private developers in designing for sustainable transport, including bus station, park and ride and bus stop design. Pedestrian and cycle infrastructure is developed in order to provide interchange between sustainable modes of transport.

audits
Audits
  • Road Safety Audit is a formal, systematic, independent assessment of the potential road safety issues associated with highway schemes. We carry out Road Safety Audits at all stages from Stage F Feasibility through to Stage 4 Monitoring post opening. These include Mobility Audits where the specific needs of mobility impaired road users are considered. Sometimes, where design options are presented to the Audit Team, a Road Safety Assessment is carried out to methodically identify which option is favourable purely in safety terms. Our auditors are qualified in accordance with HD19/03 and are members of the Society of Road Safety Auditors (SoRSA).
  • We are experienced in undertaking Non Motorised User (NMU) Audits in accordance with HD42/05 at the design stage to ensure such users are appropriately provided for within improvement schemes.
  • We are experienced in Quality Audits which increasingly form an important part of the design of a scheme prior to planning approval to ensure a wide range of issues such as urban design are not considered in isolation to road safety or NMU Audits.
